The Lesotho Tour took place over the long weekend in September 2026, bringing together a group of passionate bikers and support vehicles for an unforgettable adventure through the Mountain Kingdom. Among the motorcycles joining the expedition was the impressive Suzuki DL800DE, a machine that would prove its worth time and time again throughout the journey.
Our adventure began in Johannesburg as we made our way towards Lesotho. After crossing into the country via the Pheka Bridge border post, we left the tar roads behind and ventured onto rugged gravel routes leading to the famous Kome Caves. The journey was challenging, with rough terrain, steep inclines, and endless twists and turns, but it also offered some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.
Upon arriving at the Kome Caves, we were warmly welcomed with traditional Basotho hospitality. A feast of freshly baked bread, morogo, and meat awaited us, and as the sun set behind the mountains, we gathered around a crackling fire to share stories from the day’s ride and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this historic destination.
The DL800DE Shines on Adventure Terrain
The gravel roads tested both riders and machines, but the Suzuki DL800DE rose to the challenge with confidence and ease. As conditions became increasingly demanding, several motorcycles struggled with the rough roads and were eventually loaded onto trailers. The DL800DE, however, continued to perform exceptionally well, comfortably handling the difficult terrain and proving why it has earned a reputation as a true adventure motorcycle.
Its balance, stability, and capability gave riders the confidence needed to tackle every obstacle that Lesotho’s rugged landscape presented.
Experiencing Traditional Lesotho Life
The night at the caves was a memorable one. Local guards watched over the area throughout the evening, ensuring that everyone was safe and able to enjoy the experience with complete peace of mind.
The following morning, we set off on foot to visit a nearby waterfall. The hike provided us with a glimpse into everyday life in the surrounding communities and allowed us to experience the rich culture of Lesotho firsthand.
One lesson quickly became apparent: in Lesotho, distance can be a matter of perspective. Before setting off, someone asked our guide how far away the waterfall was. His response was simple: “Two minutes.” Those “two minutes” turned into a hike of well over thirty minutes through spectacular mountain scenery. It became one of the most memorable jokes of the trip and is something many of us still laugh about today.
A Unique Cultural Encounter
During our stay, we heard singing, cheering, ululating, and other remarkable sounds echoing across the mountains. Curious about the celebrations, we asked our guides what was taking place. They explained that a traditional coming-of-age ceremony was being held nearby and respectfully advised us not to approach the area.
Learning about these cultural traditions added another dimension to the tour and reminded us of the importance of respecting local customs and heritage while travelling through different regions.
Hospitality Fit for Visitors
Our next destination was the King’s place, where we received another warm Basotho welcome. A sheep had been specially prepared for us as honoured visitors, providing yet another opportunity to experience the generosity and hospitality that Lesotho is known for.
Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. What began as a pleasant day with scattered clouds quickly transformed into strong winds and heavy rain. Despite the sudden change, spirits remained high as we enjoyed lunch before continuing our journey towards Maseru.
Reaching Maseru
The final leg of the journey took us to Maseru, where the adventure continued with entertainment and cultural activities. We were treated to the powerful performance of an imbongi (praise poet), followed by an energetic drumming session led by Tiny Beats that brought everyone together for an unforgettable evening.
Through gravel roads, mountain passes, rainstorms, and changing conditions, the Suzuki DL800DE never missed a beat. Its outstanding performance throughout the tour demonstrated exactly why it is such a capable adventure motorcycle. No matter the terrain or challenge, it delivered reliability, confidence, and enjoyment every step of the way.
Final Thoughts
The Lesotho Tour 2026 was more than just a motorcycle trip. It was a journey filled with adventure, cultural discovery, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable memories. From the rugged roads leading to the Kome Caves to the vibrant atmosphere of Maseru, every moment showcased the beauty and uniqueness of Lesotho.
For adventure riders looking to explore beyond the ordinary, the Suzuki DL800DE proved itself to be the perfect companion, turning every challenge into part of the adventure and every destination into a story worth telling.
